You probably have a carbon monoxide detector in your house, but you might not have a detector for radon.
Radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States. It is a colorless, tasteless and odorless gas that usually forms naturally in the ground. The only way to tell if a building has elevated levels is to have it tested.
To help raise awareness, Governor Jennifer Granholm has proclaimed October 22nd - 26th Radon Action Week.
The city of Detroit will give out free radon testing kits through the end of the week. They are available from 8:30 a.m. until 4:30 p.m. in Building #4 at the Herman Keifer Complex, which is located at 1151 Taylor.
The Oakland County Health Division is also providing residents with free radon test kits. They are available from 9:00 a.m. until 5:00 p.m. at 1200 N. Telegraph in Pontiac, 27725 Greenfield in Southfield and 1010 E. West Maple Road in Walled Lake.
